As a German teacher, I feel very strongly that all young people should spend time abroad. More than any other option, foreign travel increases self-reliance, maturity, patience, and global awareness. By putting oneself in a position to be the outsider or to be different, one learns about the importance of communication, assimilation, and tolerance.
Yet in the light of recent current events in Belgium, should we reconsider study abroad as a viable learning option? While I find this most recent display of terrorism upsetting and deplorable, I cannot change my stance on the need for foreign travel, perhaps even more so at this time.
